Lantern Bass (Serranus baldwiny)
Description

Please Note: Unless specified as "WYSIWYG" (What You See Is What You Get), all fish images on this website are stock photos that represent the fish of like and kind. Lantern Bass (Serranus baldwini)
Also known as: Lantern Basslet, Baldwin’s Basslet

Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: No
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Max Size: 5 inches

The Lantern Bass is a small, cryptically patterned Caribbean species with a distinctive lattice of red and cream bands, giving it a lantern-like appearance. Compact, hardy, and full of personality, it’s an excellent choice for nano and mid-size aquariums, especially fish-only or mixed reef systems without small ornamental inverts.

Like other members of the Serranus genus, it’s semi-aggressive toward smaller tankmates but generally peaceful with fish of similar size or larger. It’s a great low-maintenance fish that acclimates easily and adds a splash of unique color and behavior.

Husbandry Tips:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons.

  • Feeding: Carnivorous—feeds well on mysis, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and quality pellets.

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; may prey on very small fish or shrimp.

  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe with caution—avoid keeping with tiny crustaceans.

  • Behavior: Likes to perch and dart among rocks; appreciates ample hiding places.

Retail Appeal:

  • Caribbean native with hardy shipping and handling profile.

  • Ideal for nano predator tanks or peaceful reef tanks with appropriately sized tankmates.

  • Eye-catching pattern and manageable size make it appealing for display and impulse buys.

The Lantern Bass is a tough, colorful Caribbean micro-predator that adds flair and character without requiring complex care—perfect for customers seeking something distinctive and durable.
