Flame Fin (Tomini) Tang (Ctenochaetus tominiensis)
Also known as: Tomini Bristletooth Tang, Tomini Surgeonfish.
Care Level: | Easy |
---|---|
Temperament: | Peaceful |
Diet: | Omnivore |
Reef Safe: | Yes |
Minimum Tank Size: | 70 gallons |
Max Size: | 6 inches |
The Flame Fin Tang is a compact yet striking member of the bristletooth tang family, well-loved for its bronze body, bright yellow pectoral fins, and electric blue highlights on the tail and dorsal edge. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this hardy and active grazer is a fantastic addition to medium-sized reef and community aquariums.
Unlike larger tang species, the Tomini Tang remains relatively small, reaching around 6 inches, making it an excellent choice for tanks as small as 75 gallons. It is peaceful compared to other tangs, though it may show territorial behavior toward similar species if introduced later.
Husbandry Tips:
- Acclimation: Prefers a minimum 75-gallon tank with plenty of open swimming space and rockwork for grazing.
- Feeding: Herbivorous, with a diet rich in marine algae, spirulina, nori, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Will also consume detritus and biofilms, contributing to tank cleanliness.
- Tank Mates: Generally peaceful, but may show aggression toward other bristletooth tangs or similarly shaped fish. Best introduced as the first tang in a system.
- Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe—won’t bother corals but helps control nuisance algae growth.
- Behavior: Active grazer that constantly picks at rockwork and substrate, helping maintain a clean aquarium environment.
Retail Appeal:
- Compact and hardy—ideal for aquarists wanting a tang in moderate-sized reef tanks.
- Algae-eating behavior makes it a valuable functional fish for reef setups.
- Vibrant coloration and unique markings stand out in any marine display.
The Flame Fin Tang is a top choice for reef keepers looking for an efficient algae grazer with striking coloration and a manageable adult size!
