Randall’s Assessor Basslet (Assessor randalli)

Also known as: Randall's Devilfish, Blue Assessor Basslet

Care Level:

Moderate

Temperament:

Semi-Aggressive

Diet:

Carnivore

Origin:

Philippines

Reef Safe:

Yes

Minimum Tank Size:

40 gallons

Max Size:

3 inches

The Randall’s Assessor Basslet is a small, peaceful reef fish known for its deep blue coloration with subtle hints of purple and its unique upside-down swimming behavior when resting under ledges. Native to the Western Pacific, it’s a great choice for nano and reef aquariums, adding a splash of color and quirky charm to the lower regions of the tank.

Unlike many basslets, A. randalli is known for being especially docile and reef-safe, making it ideal for community aquariums and cautious tankmates like pipefish, gobies, and seahorses. It does well singly or in pairs, and multiple individuals can coexist in large enough tanks with adequate hiding spaces.

Husbandry Tips:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons; ideal for nano and small reef tanks.

  • Feeding: Accepts a variety of small meaty foods including mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality pellets or flakes.

  • Tank Mates: Peaceful; compatible with other non-aggressive fish.

  • Reef Compatibility: 100% reef-safe—does not nip at corals or invertebrates.

  • Behavior: Likes overhangs and shaded crevices; often seen hovering upside down beneath rock ledges.

Retail Appeal:

  • Unique behavior draws attention and adds interest to the tank.

  • Compact, hardy, and peaceful—ideal for both beginner and advanced reef hobbyists.

  • A great addition to nano and community reef tanks where a flash of deep blue is desired.

The Randall’s Assessor Basslet is a low-maintenance gem that brings a splash of color and personality to the reef—perfect for stores looking to offer unique yet beginner-friendly livestock.
