Please Note: Unless specified as "WYSIWYG" (What You See Is What You Get), all fish images on this website are stock photos that represent the fish of like and kind. Skunk Queen Anthias (Mirolabrichthys tuka)
Also known as: Purple Queen Anthias, Yellowstriped Anthias

Care Level: Expert
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Minimum Tank Size: 60 gallons
Max Size: 7 inches

The Skunk Queen Anthias is a stunning, mid-water schooling fish known for its vibrant purple body and distinct yellow dorsal stripe, giving it a striking contrast in any reef aquarium. Native to Indo-Pacific reefs, this species thrives in large groups and requires a well-oxygenated environment with frequent feedings to maintain its energy and health.

This anthias species is best suited for experienced aquarists due to its high metabolism and specific dietary needs. It prefers a spacious, mature reef tank with plenty of open swimming space and rocky overhangs for shelter.

Husbandry Tips:

  • Acclimation: Best kept in small harems (1 male with multiple females) in tanks 125 gallons or larger.
  • Feeding: Requires frequent small meals throughout the day. Offer zooplankton, enriched mysis shrimp, copepods, and high-quality frozen foods. Will accept pellets and flakes over time with proper training.
  • Tank Mates: Compatible with peaceful community fish, but avoid aggressive tank mates that may outcompete it for food.
  • Reef Compatibility: 100% reef-safe—does not harm corals or invertebrates.
  • Behavior: Naturally planktonic, spending most of its time in the water column. Can be shy at first but becomes more active in well-established groups.

Retail Appeal:

  • Striking purple and yellow coloration makes it a standout in reef tanks.
  • Active schooling fish that adds movement and visual interest.
  • Reef-safe and peaceful, perfect for large, established reef aquariums.

The Skunk Queen Anthias is a visually stunning yet delicate species, best suited for dedicated aquarists who can provide the frequent feedings and proper environment it requires to thrive!
